Why Does My T-Shirt Bra Gap at the Top of the Cup? Causes and Fixes

Posted by Monika Jain on

The whole point of a t-shirt bra is a smooth line under your clothes. So it's frustrating when the top edge of the cup stands away from your chest, leaving a hollow that shows through your top, or a gap you can see every time you lean forward.

Most women assume the cup is simply too big. Sometimes it is. But just as often, a t-shirt bra gaps because the moulded cup shape doesn't match your breast shape, even when the size is technically right. Let's work out which it is for you.

Why T-Shirt Bras Gap More Than Other Bras

T-shirt bras have moulded cups, which means they hold a fixed, rounded shape whether you fill them or not. A soft lace cup will fold and follow your body. A moulded cup won't. So if your breast doesn't fill the top part of that pre-shaped cup, there's nowhere for the empty space to go. It simply shows up as a gap.

What Causes Cup Gapping in a T-Shirt Bra?

1. The cup is too big

The simplest cause. If there's space all around the cup, not just at the top, and the fabric wrinkles or dents when you press it, try one cup size down.

2. Your breast shape has less fullness at the top

Many women have more volume at the bottom of the breast than at the top. This is sometimes called a "bottom-heavy" or "east-west" shape. A full, rounded moulded cup expects fullness everywhere, so the top edge stands away. This is the most common reason for gapping, and going down a size won't fix it. You'll just get a cup that's too small at the bottom.

3. The straps are too loose

Loose straps let the cup fall forward. Try tightening each strap a little and see if the gap closes.

4. The band is too loose

When the band rides up at the back, the front tips downward and the cups tilt away from your chest. We explain this in detail in why your bra band rides up at the back.

5. You haven't settled into the cup

Sometimes breast tissue sits under the arm or at the edge of the wire instead of fully inside the cup. This leaves the top half empty.

Do You Need a Smaller Cup or a Different Style?

Try this simple test in front of a mirror:

  • Gap at the top only, snug at the bottom and sides: it's a shape issue. Change the cup style, not the size.

  • Gap at the top and wrinkling or space at the sides: the cup is likely too big. Go down one cup size.

  • Gap on one side only: one breast is probably slightly smaller. Fit to the larger side and adjust that strap. Our guide on padded bras for uneven breasts explains how.

Quick Fixes for a Gapping T-Shirt Bra

Before you give up on the bra, try these:

  1. Scoop and swoop. After hooking the bra, lean forward and gently sweep breast tissue from under your arm into each cup. Stand up and settle the cups.

  2. Tighten the straps by a centimetre or two at a time.

  3. Move to a tighter hook if the band feels loose.

  4. Check the neckline. A high neckline hides a small gap completely, while a deep V shows every millimetre.

If the gap is still there, the cup style is the problem.

Which T-Shirt Bra Shapes Suit Which Breast Shapes?

Breast shape

What to look for

Why it works

Less fullness at the top

Medium or demi coverage, balconette-style cups

Lower cup edge means less empty space at the top

Full at top and bottom

Full coverage moulded cups

The rounded cup is filled evenly

Wide-set breasts

Plunge or medium coverage cups

Cups angled inward sit closer to the chest

Soft or post-pregnancy breasts

Spacer or lightly padded cups

Soft cups mould to your shape rather than keeping their own

For less fullness at the top, a medium coverage t-shirt bra is usually the answer. The Semi/Medium Coverage Padded Non Wired T-shirt Bra has a lower top edge that sits flatter against the chest. Explore more in SOIE's medium coverage bras.

If you want flexibility, spacer cup bras are made from a breathable, lighter fabric that adapts to your shape more than stiff foam does.

Does a Small Gap Show Under Clothes?

Under a loose kurta or a structured shirt, a small gap usually isn't visible. Under a thin, fitted t-shirt, it often is, as a line or dent across the top of the bust. That's exactly the situation a t-shirt bra is meant for, so it's worth getting the shape right. Here are more tips on choosing a bra that works under white t-shirts and thin tops.

T-Shirt Bra Gapping FAQs

Should I go down a cup size if my bra gaps?

Only if the cup is loose all over. If it's snug at the bottom and gaps only at the top, change the cup style instead.

Why does only one cup gap?

Most women have one breast slightly smaller than the other. Fit the larger side and tighten the strap on the smaller side.

Can a gapping bra be altered?

Not easily. Moulded cups can't be taken in like fabric cups. A different style is usually the better fix.

Is a non-padded t-shirt bra less likely to gap?

Often, yes. Non-padded and spacer cups follow your natural shape more closely than thick moulded foam.

Find the Cup That Fits Your Shape

A gap isn't a sign your body is the "wrong" shape. It just means that particular cup was designed for a different one. Adjust your straps and band, try a lower-cut cup, and you'll find a t-shirt bra that lies perfectly flat.
